 Curriculum

2                                2nd grade Curriculum at St. Paul

Religion

In 2nd grade our Bible stories begin with Creation, then the Garden of Eden and original sin. We continue to Abraham’s journeys, Isaac’s sons, the story of Joseph and onto Moses’ life. Other Old Testament stories include Gideon, Hezekiah, Deborah, David and Goliath, Elijah and Elisha.

Our New Testament stories begin with Jesus’ birth, the shepherds, wise men, Zachariah and Anna.  Several of Jesus’ miracles and parables are in our curriculum, as well as His Passion.  We finish with stories of the apostles, including Paul, and how they continued to spread Jesus’ teachings through their lives and words.

Math

2nd grade Math is largely a review directed toward mastery of skills introduced in 1st grade.  Basic addition and subtraction facts are continued to be practiced, and extended to 2-digit and 3-digit numbers. Carrying and borrowing of 2-digit numbers is introduced but not intended for mastery in 2nd grade. Time, money, measurement, fractions and basic geometry are also included.  Multiplication is introduced.

Social Studies

Social Studies centers primarily on the child as a part of various groups - a family, neighborhood, community, city, state, country, and continent.  Responsibilities as citizens are discussed, as well as compare to those same characteristics of people of other cultures.  Students begin to learn to read and draw maps and map keys, and review directions.

Science

Life Science, Earth Science, dinosaurs, weather, and Physical Science are expanded from what was learned in 1st grade.
